Pranayama is the gateway to meditation.

The second part of the pranayama sadhana course will explore the vitalising practices of pranayama and the use of bandhas, postural locks.Foundations of practice must be solid to not only be able to physically do these practices but to assimilate their benefits.

Kapalbhati and bhastrika are the classical vitalising practices and combined with bandhas and retention of breath they seek to amplify and channel prana. These techniques are not only to harmonise the pranas of the body, creating health and strength in the nervous system, but also to open the doorway to meditation. The control and expansion of the pranic field is a bridge leading to suspension of breath, or kumbhaka, where the yogi seeks to become aware of the suspension of mind and thus become open to deeper experience.

It has been said that prana should be tamed more slowly than a lion or an elephant, hence this course is only open to those who have attended the first part and have been practicing regularly. Practice will help ensure the body and nervous system are in the best possible state to receive and assimilate the powerful effects of these practices.

The weekend will be an intensive combination of theory and practice including:

  • Introductory practices for breath retention
  • Kapalbhati pranayama techniques and development
  • Bhastrika pranayama techniques and development
  • Jalandhara, moola and uddiyana bandhas
  • Internal and external retention of breath
  • Discussion on the physiological aspects of these practices
  • Development and sequencing of pranayama sadhana

Suitable for practitioners or teachers who have worked with the preparatory practices and nadi shodhana for some time. Even if there is familiarity with these techniques, we will develop them from the beginning. This will be an opportunity to explore systematic pranayama practice that can be repeated and developed over six months to one year or more in your own sadhana.

Practicalities

Where: Grempoli’s natural setting and home-grown organic food is prana rich. It is a place conducive to sadhana and experiencing depth and substance.

When: The retreat will be held from Friday 4th starting 5pm to Sunday 6th September, finishing by 5pm.

We will eat, practice, work and maybe even sing together.

The weekend will be taught in English with Italian translation.

Contribution: Program, accommodation and meals – €180; Program and meals but no accommodation – €140

To participate in the activities of the Association it is necessary to be a Member (Annual membership fee €10)
